Couples & Relationship Therapy

Couples & Relationship Therapy — Online Therapy in Colorado

Support for Communication, Trust, and Emotional Connection

You’re in the right place if you and your partner feel stuck in repeating patterns — distance, shutdown, tension, or conflict — and you want to understand what’s happening beneath the surface so you can reconnect with more safety and honesty.

Relationships can be incredibly meaningful — and also deeply painful when communication breaks down or you feel distant, misunderstood, or alone. You and your partner may find yourselves stuck in the same arguments, withdrawing from each other, feeling hurt or defensive, or unsure how to repair trust or closeness.

If your relationship feels strained, tense, distant, or overwhelming at times, you’re not alone — and support can help.

I’m David Rothman, LPC, and I provide online couples and relationship therapy for adults throughout Colorado. I work with couples and individuals who want to strengthen connection, work through conflict, heal relational wounds, and build healthier ways of being together.

What Relationship Struggles Can Look Like

Relationship distress often grows slowly — until it starts to feel constant or heavy.

You might notice:

  • repeating the same arguments without resolution

  • feeling distant, disconnected, or unheard

  • criticism, defensiveness, or walking on eggshells

  • unresolved hurt or resentment

  • mismatched needs around closeness or independence

  • breaks in trust or emotional safety

  • difficulty communicating emotions or needs

  • fear of conflict — or conflict that escalates quickly

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t care — it’s that the way you’re trying to reach each other keeps misfiring.

Couples therapy helps you understand — and repair — those patterns.

How Couples Therapy Can Help

Therapy with me is steady, respectful, and emotionally aware. My job is not to take sides — but to help both partners feel seen, understood, and safe enough to be honest.

Together, we’ll work to:

  • understand the cycles that keep you stuck

  • improve communication without blame or attack

  • name emotions and needs more clearly

  • strengthen trust and emotional safety

  • repair past hurts and misunderstandings

  • reduce defensiveness, withdrawal, or reactivity

  • rebuild closeness, intimacy, and connection

  • make choices about your relationship with clarity and care

Many couples are surprised to find that conflict itself isn’t the problem — it’s the disconnection underneath it.

My Approach to Couples & Relationship Therapy

My work with couples is attachment-based and emotionally focused (EFT) — approaches that help partners understand what’s happening beneath conflict, shutdown, criticism, or distance.

We slow things down and look at:

  • the emotional needs driving your reactions

  • how each partner learned to connect or protect themselves

  • the unspoken fears under anger or withdrawal

  • the patterns that keep repeating — even when you don’t want them to

  • how to reach for each other in safer, more supportive ways

Sessions are paced and structured, so both partners have space to speak and feel heard.

Common Issues I Help Couples & Individuals With

I support couples navigating:

  • recurring conflict and communication problems

  • emotional disconnection or loneliness in the relationship

  • attachment wounds and insecurity

  • life transitions and stress

  • intimacy and closeness concerns

  • trust injuries — emotional or relational

  • navigating neurodiversity, trauma, or anxiety in relationships

  • questions about whether — or how — to continue the relationship

I also work with individuals who want to better understand relationship patterns, attachment concerns, or the impact of past relationships.

What Couples Sessions Are Like

In therapy, you can expect:

  • a non-judgmental space for both partners

  • slow, structured conversations

  • curiosity rather than blame

  • attention to emotions — not just logistics

  • support in calming and repairing when things get heated

My role is to help you stay connected while you talk about hard things.

A Gentle Note About Safety

If there is current domestic violence, coercion, ongoing emotional abuse, or safety concerns, couples therapy may not be appropriate — but individual support can help. Your safety and wellbeing matter first.
